Monticello Township in 1903. Born March 31, 1857 in Wiesbaden, Germany
to Frederick and Marion (Rudder) Odernheimer. Lineage traced back to
1200 on paternal side, maternal line is descended from Sir Miles
Patrick who flourished in 1099. The father of our subject was born in
Wiesbaden in 1808, spending his entire life in that place ,his death
occurring on the 12th of December 1885, when he was 78 years of age.
His wife, who was born at Sydney, New South Wales, passed away in 1863.
He obtained his education: common schools till 9 years, Gymnasium till
16(=~American high school), then entered Navy as cadet for 5 years --
became Lieutenant, then quit due to failing eyesight. Decided to try
luck in new world, sailed for US September 1881, locating first near
Austin TX (Travis County). Served as deputy sheriff of the county and
US deputy marshal for 5 years 1884 Austin TX. Married Sara Buchanan of
Mansfield, Ill.--she died in Champaign in 1886, leaving daughter
Virginia. Moved 1886 to Mansfield, purchase and worked farm till 1890.
Sold and purchased 80 acres 5 miles east of Monticello --moved there.
paid 47$. Worked and improved land -- value increased 1903 to $125 per
acre 10 August 1887, he married Charlotte Jane Baird, daughter of
William and Marie Baird, Circleville Ohio. Three children died in
infancy. Virginia has completed common school course and is expected to
enter Illinois University in 1903.
